It’s the most wonderful time of the year! I bet you can picture this: It’s the day after Thanksgiving, our bellies are full, we’re exhausted because we went Black Friday shopping all night, they’ve FINALLY started playing all of our holiday favorites on the radio, and -most of all, my personal favorite- it’s time to deck the halls! I’ve slowly noticed these really cute “welcome” signs on front porches around our neighborhood with all different themes. I just knew I had to make one for Christmas with reclaimed wood!

I’ve been brewing up my Christmas decor plans for about six long months and I couldn’t wait to start with this super easy reclaimed wood project! You only need a few materials to make a basic one, or if you’re extra (like me) you can use some of your excess decor to embellish your sign and tie all of your Christmas “feng shui” together! My total project cost was $5! I already had all of the material except for the white paint.

Here’s all you need to make a Reclaimed Wood Welcome Sign:

Reclaimed wood (possibilities are endless, and mine was leftover pine board for a deck, which I also used to make hanging wall shelves)

Paint (Spray paint, Acrylic Paint)

Paint Brushes

Sandpaper

Scissors

Stencil

Embellishments (twine, pine branch, pine cones, berries, etc)

First, paint your board. I used two colors: first gold, then white. I used the gold as an underlay to give the woodgrain “imperfections” a slight shimmer. Once the layers dried, I took a piece of sandpaper and made long brush strokes to scrape the layers to give the wood a chalk paint look. (You can also buy chalk paint to skip this step but I am frugal and used what I already had at home)

Once you’ve achieved your desired “weathered” look, stencil your wording (ie: “WELCOME” or “Home Sweet Home”). I made some quick stencils on my machine and used them to trace the letters onto the board with a pencil.

Next, paint/fill in with your acrylic paint & let dry. Embellish with your decoration! I picked a branch and faux berries off of an old wreath and tied them together with floral wire. Then I reasonably wrapped my board with some twine (until I felt like it was enough) around the bottom and the top. Lastly, I tied the floral branch around the twine. It’s a great way to add a removable touch to the sign without damaging it! Once the holiday season is over, you can take it off, and add a different embellishment for each season. (IE: a heart wreath for Valentine’s Day, a shamrock, Easter Egg, etc).

All that’s left to do is to place it by your front door and enjoy!
