Hey Friends! How many times have you searched for a perfect piece of unique furniture to make your personal space stand out? I love that catalogs and big box furniture stores are veering toward unique pieces that can be mixed and matched. Nightstands in particular are key to the focal point of the room, the bed. They can be handcrafted, carved, stained, manufactured, you name it. And, they’re all almost always as beautiful as they look in catalogs. There’s only one little detail about a catalog nightstand that stopped me from making a purchase, and that’s the price tag.

In search of a simple natural wood night stand for months, all I could find were two beautiful handcrafted modern farmhouse style nightstands on Etsy and I immediately fell in love…until I saw the price. One simple nightstand can cost anywhere from $100 to well over $200 each. As a SAHM of three little ones, it just didn’t seem reasonable to pay that amount at the time. That’s how I found a way to make my own handcrafted modern nightstand and it is just as beautiful! If you have an old wooden crate laying around, find out how you can make your own nightstand below!
Here’s what I used to make this awesome nightstand:
If you don’t have a crate, don’t worry! A local craft store like JoAnn or Michaels usually sells them too. You can usually get one for about $10.
(optional) Stain or Paint to match your furniture. Our room furniture is natural wood colored and we left ours unfinished.

Simply use the screws that came with the table legs and screw the legs securely onto your crate, then decorate! I think they’re great! The legs are very sturdy, sleek, and modern! They’re solid and heavy duty which makes the center of the nightstand’s gravity is perfect. I can set a heavy object atop the nightstand and it doesn’t tip over! The table legs make our room feel more spacious and lifted. I couldn’t be more pleased with the results! You can set your nightstand either “landscape” or “portrait” style for length or height too!

I purchased 6 inch legs because we have a floor bed that is relatively low to the ground. The legs come in two additional sizes, 16 inch and 24 inch, if you chose to make your crate taller than 6 inches off of the ground. I searched high and low for an affordable set of table legs and these are the result! They really are amazing and I am ecstatic that the nightstand turned out so well!
